Babies
alessia x reader
~~~
It had been a long journey. A journey full of anticipation, hope, and a lot of patience. The kind of patience that only people who’ve been through multiple rounds of IVF truly understand. You and Alessia had been together since your college days at UNC, where you met during your first practice. Fast-forward to now, you were married, both playing for Arsenal, and building a life together.
The news of your pregnancy had come a couple weeks ago, and it was almost surreal. The weeks of waiting for results, the endless uncertainty, the longing for something more, and then, finally, that beautiful moment when you saw the two pink lines on the test. You’d both cried—tears of joy, relief, and even disbelief. The doctor’s office had felt like a whole new world when you heard those words: “You’re pregnant.” You both had been holding your breath, praying for this moment.
But today was something even more monumental. Today was the first scan. You’d been counting down the days, feeling a blend of excitement and nervousness building up inside you.
You and Alessia had been in and out of doctors' offices together, and though she had always been supportive and excited for you both, you could sense the difference today. She was pacing back and forth in the waiting room, her hands running through her hair, trying to calm her nerves. She couldn’t stop glancing at her watch as though time would speed up if she willed it enough.
"Less, you’re going to wear a hole in that floor if you keep pacing like that,” you teased with a smile, nudging her shoulder as you sat down on one of the chairs, trying to settle your own anxious thoughts.
She let out a small laugh but still couldn’t help herself. “I’m just… nervous, you know? It’s our first scan, babe. What if there’s something wrong?”
You reached out and took her hand in yours, squeezing it reassuringly. “Everything’s going to be fine. You know how much I’ve wanted this, how much we’ve wanted this. We’re in good hands.”
Alessia paused for a moment, her eyes softening as she looked at you. “I know. I just… I want this to be everything we dreamed of, you know?”
You smiled, reaching up to brush a lock of hair from her face. “We’ve got this, Less. All of it.”
As soon as the nurse called your name, you stood up, your hand still tightly clutching hers. The scan room was calm and sterile, with the soft hum of machines in the background. Alessia moved close to you, not letting go of your hand for a second.
“Okay, let’s take a look,” the sonographer said as she began applying the gel on your belly. “This will be a little cold, but it won’t take long.”
You flinched at the cold gel, but Alessia’s hand on yours steadied you, and you leaned back against the bed, your eyes locked with hers. She was staring at you, her expression a mix of awe and anxiety, and you could tell she was trying to hold it together.
"Ready?" the sonographer asked with a smile, looking up from the screen.
You nodded, your heart racing as you waited for the image to appear.
The room was silent for a moment as the screen came to life, and then the sonographer's voice broke through the quiet.
“Well, it looks like we have three little ones in there,” she said, her voice filled with warmth. “You’re having triplets.”
Alessia froze, her eyes widening, and you could feel your breath catch in your throat. Triplets?
“Wait… three?” you managed to choke out, glancing at the screen where three tiny dots were visible, all of them moving, all of them so incredibly small. You looked up at Alessia, who was still staring at the screen, her jaw dropped.
"Three..." Alessia repeated, her voice barely a whisper.
The sonographer nodded with a smile. “You really have three babies growing in there. Congratulations.” She decided to give the two of you a couple minutes alone to process the information an stepped out of the room.
The words hung in the air, and for a second, neither of you said anything. Three babies. It was everything you had ever wanted, and more. Your head was spinning. You could see Alessia’s expression shifting from shock to sheer joy, her eyes tearing up as she reached over to squeeze your hand tighter.
“This is… this is unreal,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “We’re going to need a bigger house.”
You smiled through the daze, your heart fluttering. “Yeah, and maybe a bigger car too,” you joked, trying to lighten the overwhelming wave of emotions crashing over both of you.
Alessia turned to you with wide eyes, her lips curling into a grin that reached all the way to her eyes. “Oh my god, we have three babies, babe.” She laughed lightly, almost nervously, but it was clear she was trying to wrap her mind around it, just as you were.
You laughed too, your hand still on your stomach, the reality of the situation slowly sinking in. “I really need to start making more money,” you said, the words escaping before you could think about it. “Maybe I should work on my endorsement deals or get another sponsorship.”
Alessia raised an eyebrow, slowly starting to break through her shock. “Three babies, huh? Well, I guess I’d better stop spending all my money on shoes, then.”
“You’re not allowed to spend a penny until we figure out how to pay for all this,” you teased back, and she threw you a mock glare.
“What are we going to do with all these babies?” she asked, laughing softly.
You chuckled, both of you caught in the absurdity of the situation, “I guess we’ll just take it one day at a time,” you said, squeezing her hand tighter. “We’ve been through everything together—college, football, marriage. And now… we get to be parents. Together.”
Alessia nodded, her eyes brimming with tears now, but her smile never faltering. “Together,” she echoed softly, looking at the image of your babies she now held in her hands.
Two blossoms on a single branch
Ona Battle x reader
Triggers; Post partum anxiety. Angst.
Ona was always very clear on that she wanted to be a mom. She wanted kids, multiple of them. A family, a golden retriever, an suv: the whole shebang. The process from you getting pregnant through ivf wasn’t very long, you got lucky and it sticked on the first try. Or, she sticked. Your sweet daughter, Sofia was born on her duedate a bright sunny day in July. She was the most perfect newborn: she slept through the night fast and would only cry if she was hungry. She was all over just a very happy baby.
That lasted until she was 3 months, and let’s just say; hell broke loose. Your normally happy daughter had started crying at every chance she got. She would only be quiet if she was being rocked in her stroller or if she was being bounced back and forth. Sometimes, bouncing wasn’t even enough. You had spent hours upon hours each night trying to calm her so that Ona would get her sleep as her restitution was a part of her job. Being one of the best footballers in the world had its benefits.
You were pacing in the downstairs living room while walking back and forth between the couch and the kitchen in hopes that it would calm Sofia down. The now 1,5 year old was crying even after food, diaper, cuddlesand bathing. Nothing seemed to help. Her high pitched screaming was awful, and you knew that Ona had been developed postpartum anxiety that she was still working on. It was normal for partners, especially female partners to develope it as they naturally would fear that the baby wouldn’t connect. Ona hadn’t felt connected to the baby since the era of crying had begun. Every time Ona stepped into the room while she was crying, it would only get worse and you wouldn’t be able to calm her down. You were trying your best to support her, but sometimes you wished that you could have some support as you were running on 3 hours sleep every night for the last 9 months.
“Shh, baby, come here, you are okay. Mamma is here, princesa” You shushed as the high pitched screaming started just five minutes after you had put her down sleeping in her stroller. The stroller was where she usually slept best leaving you to have an inside stroller and an outside stroller. The little blonde was red from crying, her icy blue eyes full of tears as she grabbed your arm. You stood up and started rocking her again. Her crying was only escalating, and you were just hoping that Ona wouldn’t wake up. “Baby, mamma dosent know what’s wrong” You said as you tried to adjust her position to a more upright one. You had done everything we could; taken her to a bunch of doctors, chiropractors and therapists. Nothing was wrong with her, she was just fussy. You brushed her hair back from her face as it was drenched in tears. “Ai, mamma wishes she could understand you better, preciosa” you said as you walked towards the kitchen hoping that she was wanting her bottle. It was more of a comfort than a source of food as she was getting older, but she was still taking it. You pressed the baby brezza. The machine buzzed as the milk was mixed and warmed at the perfect temperature. You grabbed the bottle and tested it on your arm before taking it with you to the living room. You sat up in the big larger chair and supported your daughter on a pillow as you offered her the bottle. She thankfully accepted it as she kept drinking making the cutest whines you could ever imagine a baby making. Everytime she stopped crying, you were reminded of how sweet she was and how much you loved her.
The clock was now 6.30 and Ona entered the living room. You quickly gestured for her to not talk as Sofia had finally settled down. When Sofia would finally sleep, you wouldn’t dare to move. “Hi” you whispered as she shoot you an apologetic smile while slipping into the bathroom. You frowned. You missed your wife. You missed how she kissed you on your forehead, how she could hug you, how she would hold you and how she would cuddle you when you went to bed. Life hasn’t really allowed for any of that lately. Sofia wasn’t at a place where you could bring her to the trainings as she only cried. You loved being a football player, but you loved being Sofia’s mamma more so going back to work was paused.
After some time, Ona reappeared from the bathroom as she was fully dressed to go to work. “No breakfast, grabbing something at the arena” she said as she kissed your forehead and walked fast towards the door. “Baby?” You asked as she stopped with her back towards you holding tightly on to the door handle. “Mmm?” She responded, not turning around. Almost like a deer in the headlights. Sofia then woke up and turns her head towards her mami while blinking slowly. “Que, mi-» Ona started before she looked at Sofia in horror. “Ai, no-“ she said again as she was cut off by the familiar sound of Sofia fussing while she was looking at her mami. Her little lips forming into a pout as her feet was kicking and her hands were reaching towards Ona. Ona quickly walked out the door before saying “sorry” as she left. When the door closed, Sofia was once again screaming. “Ai, mi princesa, what’s wrong” you cooed as you tried to cradle her in your arms. It didn’t work as she only became more wiggly, and you were forced to put her down to give yourself a minute to breathe. She had been walking for a few months, so as soon as you, put her down she shot up while launching unsteadily towards the door only to fall on her butt when she tried to reach the doorknob. “Mama” she said as she started crying. You sighted and walked towards her to pick her up. “NO, Mama! Mama!” She screamed as she tried to throw herself backwards. “Baby, I’m here, mamma is here” You said as you catched her and leaned her body into you and she grabbed your sweater with all the might that her tiny fists could hold. “Mama” she cried as you stood confused while bouncing her back and forth in the living room. You stopped in front of the window to see Ona pull out of the parking lot in her Mercedes. You could hear Sofia fumbling with something behind your back as if she was playing with the shelf. “Baby, be caref-“ you said as you shifted her position to sit on your hip. Except she had something in her hands. A frame of you and Ona before Sofia was born. Ona holding your waist as you laughed together. Your absolute favourite picture of you together.
The little girl pointed to the picture as she sniffled. “Mama” she said as she pointed and hugged the frame into her body. You sat down with her in the couch and grabbed the picture as you held it up infront of her. “that’s Mamma” You said as you pointed towards you. “And that’s Mami” you said as you pointed towards Ona. Sofia sniffled as she wiped her nose with her hand before pointing towards Ona. “Mama” she said as you took a look at her and realised that she was trying to talk. “Mamma” you said as you pointed to yourself. “Mami” you said as you pointed towards Ona. “That’s mamma and Mami” You repeated as she sniffed. “Mami” she mumbled as you started at her in shock. “Yes Sofia! Mami, that’s right! Estas mami!” You said as you cheered, Sofia almost immediately clapping for herself. It was the first time that Sofia had been able to separate mamma from mami and you couldn’t be more proud as I wished that Ona would be here for it.
Later that day you tried to feed Sofia lunch after her midday nap. She wasn’t having it throwing the soft boiled paprika to the ground before the potatoes and the carrots followed. She cried, and cried, and cried and cried and cried. You let out a sight as you picked her up. “Preciousa, mamma knows that you are hungry” you said as you looked at her while she was crying. You closed your eyes and let out a sighed before taking a couple of deep breaths like the therapist had advised Ona to. “Okay preciousa, how about mamma make you some porridge, si?” You said as you reached over to the little girl and picked her up. She was still crying, but not as bad as before. It had probably something to do with the smell of the familiar porridge spreading around the house. It was one of the few things she liked, and it was the same porridge Ona had grown up with. The smell of milk, oats and cinnamon was wrapping your house in a feeling of bliss, comfort and familiarity. As the porridge was done, you buckled Sofia into her chair again before feeding it to her. She was luckily eating this time, but you could see that the exhaustion was taking its toll on her. You picked her up and got her all cleaned off as you headed towards the living room. Originally, you had wanted to keep her toys in her playroom but motherhood was rough and toys were now in every room. You sat Sofia down as she reached for her train. It was a blue train that Ona got her for her first birthday. She loved the train and would always bring it to bed when you tried putting her down for the first time at night. After a good 20 minutes of Sofia playing soundly on the floor giving you some well needed time to refresh your mind: the lock in the door clicked. Your eyes shot up as you immediately got scared. Ona was at practice and all of your family were busy. You grabbed Sofia terrified of whoever was behind the door. You held Sofia close as she looked up at you and was feeding off of your nervous energy. Your hand searched for your phone to be ready to dial for help as you gulped. The door-handle suddenly twisted and Sofia started her high pitched crying when she saw the face behind the door. It was Ona that had been told to go home early as she seemed exhausted. Sofia cried as she screamed and Ona looked like she was about to fall apart in the middle of the hallway. Sofia screamed as she reached her arms out and threw herself back in your arms trying to wiggle loose.
Then it hit you like a brick. Like a train. Like a trailer. As if the sky had just fallen down. Sofia wanted Ona. She wanted mami, not mamma. She was missing mami, and her little heart was longing for her mami’s warm touches. Sofia and Ona had a good relationship before the crying started, and you were just now able to put two pieces together. You sat down Sofia on the floor as you stood up and looked at Ona. Ona gulped as the toddler was stumbling towards her terrified of what would happen and her hand instinctively reached for the door. “Ona, stay.” You commanded as your daughter made her way towards Ona. She reached her front and stood at Ona’s legs trying to be picked up as she cried. Her little arms reaching up to Ona as she wanted to be close. “Mami,mami!” She yelled as Ona closed her eyes and took a breath while once again, looking like she was about to break down. She took a step a side causing your daughter to fall on her butt making her cry even louder. “She wants you” Ona said as she ushered towards the staircase and your master bedroom. You sighted as you picked up Sofia, and just as you were about to try and soothe her; you decided that it was time to try something new.
You walked after Ona with the screaming baby in your arms. Ona was sitting on the bed, her face in her hands while she was sobbing. Sofia stopped crying as she looked nervously at you. “Mami” she said as she pointed towards Ona. “Si princesa, estas mami, Mami is feeling sad. Maybe you wanna give her a cuddle, si?” You said as you slowly moved towards Ona scared that she was gonna leave again. You sat down next to her on the bed as your daughter sobbed. “Ona, what does Sofia call me?” You asked as Sofia sobbed in your arms. “Mamma” Ona responded still with her face hidden. “Si, and what is she saying?” You asked as you tried to console Ona. “Mamma” Ona said as she looked up at you, eyes red from crying. Just as you were about to continue your rambles, Sofia reached her arms for Ona and got out of your grip leaving her to bolt at Ona. “Mami, Mami” she cried as she grabbed the fabric of Ona’s sweater tightly, like she was scared that she would leave again. “She’s saying Mami” you said as you looked at Ona who wasn’t able to put the pieces of the puzzle together even thought you were basically giving her all the clues. “Mami” Sofia muttered as she frowned and sat down on her butt after not getting any attention. Ona’s eyes lit up as it finally clicked. She looked down at Sofia and instantly grabbed the little girl holding her close like she did when she was a baby. Sofia’s big blue eyes met Ona’s and a small smile formed on her face as she closed her eyes and relaxed. “Ona, she wants you. That’s why she’s crying. She wants her mami.” You said as you rubbed Ona’s back. You could see tears forming in Ona’s eyes as she studied the little girl suddenly seeing how eyes were icy blue, just the the most beautiful glacier she had ever seen. How her skin felt like the most expensive silk she had ever touched. Her finger traced her noce as she saw the little ski jump nose already making its mark on her face. The roses in her cheeks making her look so vulnerable. “Baby, mami’s here. Mami is so so sorry, but Mami is here now. Mami is never gonna disappoint you again, princesa. Mami is gonna get better, for you and for mamma.” She said as Sofia’s body finally relaxed and drifted off to sleep. You looked at Ona who looked like she had just discovered oil. She looked over at you as tears were forming in her eyes. “I’m sorry, mi amor. I’m so sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I’m gonna take the week off, and we can have time together as a family. I haven’t been the best mami, but I’m gonna try to figure this out for you, for us. I’m sorry for diss-“ you cut her off with a kiss knowing this was finally it. Ona was finally ready to try to connect with her daughter again.
Adventures | Leah Williamson x singer!reader
Request | Masterlist | prompt list
Part two for biggest fan.
A/N wrote most of this and forgot to save it 😭😭
Warning talks of miscarriage, pregnancy, morning sickness
Summary You and Leah start a family
Since the end of your tour, you and Leah had been desperate to start the course of IVF.
Having a family had been in yours and Leah visions for years, both of you wanting to have a family of your own.
So when you approached a fertility clinic and they explained the procedure, you were ecstatic.
You and Leah would potentially have a baby within the next year.
The process started the week following the appointment.
Leah had an egg retrieval procedure.
You stayed by her side the whole time, holding her hand tightly.
The following steps were far too scientific for you to understand.
Then came the final moment.
The embryo transfer.
Similarly what you did to Leah, she held your hand through the procedure, kissing your forehead every so often.
You both walked out the hospital, smiling at the thought of what nine months from now might look like.
—
The 29th of March held so many memories.
It was one of the best days of the year.
On that day, you get to celebrate your girl.
Over the years, you’d gone all out for Leah birthday, wearing to spoil her the best you could.
You’d wake up early, make her breakfast, bring it to her in bed.
But this year was different.
This year, you still woke up early, but with a sudden wave of nausea.
You jumped up from bed, trying your hardest to not wake Leah, and ran to the bathroom.
You barely made it before throwing your head in the toilet.
You felt Leah’s hand on your back, rubbing it comfortingly as you continued to throw up.
Once you’d finished, you sat back against the wall, Leah coming to sit down next to you.
“I’m so sorry, le. This isn’t how today was supposed to start. I was gonna make you breakfast and now—” You said, tears welling in your eyes.
“—Baby, hey, it’s okay. Don’t cry. As long as I’m with you, it’s perfect. Look, I’ll go down and make some breakfast and bring it upstairs.” Leah told you and you weakly nodded.
Leah left the bathroom soon after to go make pancakes.
As you were getting up, your eyes focused on a small box on top of the cabinet.
You picked the box up, taking a test out and unwrapping it.
You quickly took it, setting it down on the bathroom counter.
You wanted Leah to be with you when you looked, but you didn’t want her to be upset on her birthday if it was negative.
It was still a few days early to take the test.
The doctors recommended at least three weeks and it had only been two and a half but you were certain.
You hadn’t realised how much time had gone by until Leah walked upstairs with two plates of pancakes in her hands.
You walked over to the bed, getting comfy before Leah handed you breakfast.
Lying in bed next to you, Leah looked cautiously over to you.
“Baby, have you taken a test yet?” Leah asked
“I’ve just taken one. I haven’t looked yet. I wanted you to be there.” You explained and Leah took your hand in hers. “I don’t want you to be disappointed on your birthday if it’s negative.”
“Y/N, I don’t care if it’s negative, baby. It’s okay if this time hasn’t worked, it’s the first time. We can try again. Well go look after breakfast, okay?”
You nodded, Leah pressing a kiss to your cheek.
It had been a while and you and Leah still hadn’t looked at the test.
It wasn’t until you went through to the bathroom, that you decided to call Leah through to do it.
Leah wrapped an arm around you, her hand rubbing up and down your side.
“Remember, it doesn’t matter if it’s positive or negative.” Leah reminded you, kissing your temple.
“3, 2, 1…” you both counted, before flipping the test.
You mouths dropped as you read the word on it.
Pregnant
“You’re pregnant, baby!” Leah exclaimed, picking you up and twirling you.
“We’re gonna have a baby.” You smiled, leaning in to kiss Leah.
“This is the best birthday ever. I love you so much.”
—
“Le! Come here!” You exclaimed, Leah running through to the living room where you were sat.
“What? Is something wrong?” Leah asked, panicked.
“They kicked. I definitely just felt a kick. Come.” You told her, grabbing her hand and resting it on your now 18 week bump.
“Come on, bubba. Kick for mummy.” Leah whispered, rubbing your bump.
As she finished her words, a small kick was felt.
Leah gleamed up at you, the most biggest smile on her face.
“Did you feel it?”
She nodded quickly, going back to focus on your bump.
Every time Leah spoke to your baby, they kicked.
And every time they didn’t kick, Leah would wait until they did.
Leah stayed there for at least an hour, just talking to your baby.
—
Christmas was your favourite time of the year.
The aesthetics, the weather, the fact you got to spend time with loved ones.
It all just made you happy.
This year though, was quite the opposite.
Yes, the aesthetics hadn’t changed, and the weather remained the same and you still got to spend time with family.
But this year, you were nine months pregnant.
You have been trying to induce yourself into labour for the past week.
You’d spent hours bouncing up and down on the yoga ball.
You’d gone on several walks, curb walking, hoping that it could help.
Long story short, it didn’t. Because you’re sat here on the morning of Christmas Eve still nine months pregnant.
“Le, please come tell your daughter to just come already.” You sighed, flopping against the sofa, exhausted because you’d had to stand for more than five minutes.
“Hi, bubba.” Leah began, lying in between your legs, her head resting on the side of your bump. “Me and mama really want to meet you. Come on, bubba. I know you’re comfy in there, but you have to come meet us.”
Your baby girl just responded with a hard kick to your bladder.
“I need to go to the toilet now.” You groaned, Leah helping you up as you waddled to the toilet. “Fuck. Leah!”
Leah ran through to the hallway, seeing you standing there, holding your bump as you looked down to a puddle on the floor.
“Baby time?” Leah questioned, a panicked look on her face.
“Baby time.” You confirmed
Leah started running round like a headless chicken.
Running upstairs to get the bag, then running to get the car seat, then into the bedroom to get you some spare clothes.
“Le, baby, we’ve still got plenty of time. Calm down. Let’s put on a movie, I’ll go get changed.” You told her, pressing a kiss to her cheek before grabbing the clothes from her.
The rest of the morning went quite quickly. Your contractions were now six minutes apart.
Leah had been so good, rubbing your back, getting you whatever you needed.
It was at 1 o’clock when you finally made your way to hospital.
The journey there seemed to take forever.
Leah’s hand rested on your thigh the whole time, squeezing it gently every now and then.
Due to yours and Leah’s fame and recognition within the world, you’d gone through the whole process and pregnancy at a private hospital.
Arriving at the hospital, Leah helped you get out the car, taking the bags in her hand and guiding you to the hospital.
At this point, you’d been in labour for five hours and were sure that you were beginning the later stages of labour.
The contractions were now excruciating, making you double over in pain each time a contraction hit.
The nurse guided you to a room, where a birthing pool was in the corner.
You’d asked for a birthing pool, still making your mind up whether or not to give birth in it.
The nurse checked you over, telling you and Leah that you were already eight centimetres dilated.
“Two more centimetres away from meeting her, baby.” Leah said, kissing your temple as a huge smile took over her face.
You breathed a sigh of relief, only a bit more longer of this left.
Over the next hour, you decided you’d like to give the birthing pool a try.
Leah ran a hot soothing temperature and helped you in.
She massaged your back and you breathed in the gas and air the doctors gave you.
When you arrived at the hospital, you were already too dilated for the epidural so you had to go with gas and air instead.
“Le, I think it’s time. I need to push.” You told her, already out of breath from active labour.
Leah got up quickly, pressing the button on the side of the bed.
Within seconds, the nurses were there.
They went through everything with you before telling you to push.
You gripped Leah’s hand as you pushed.
You’re sure you heard a bone crack, but Leah insisted she was fine.
“You’re doing so well, baby.” Leah whispered against your temple.
“It hurts so bad, le.”
“I know, love. I’m sorry.” Leah said, taking a piece of sweat drenched hair from your face.
After what must have been fifteen minutes of gruelling pushing, there was still no sign of your daughter.
“I can’t do it.” You sobbed, throwing your head back after pushing.
The nurses shot Leah a look.
“Try get in the pool with her. It may relax her.” One of them told Leah and Leah nodded straight away.
You relaxed against Leah’s chest, Leah’s arms wrapping round you as you held onto them.
“A bit more, baby. I promise.”
You pushed, your teeth gritted as you sued all your power.
Leah whispered inspirational words as you pushed.
“I can see her head. Keep pushing.”
“Her heads nearly out, love. I can see her.” Leah said, her voice breaking as her emotions got to her.
“One more big push.” The nurse stated and you pushed, the last of your energy being poured into this push. “She’s here! Well done mama.”
Your daughter was placed on your chest, small cries escaping her mouth.
“She’s here, baby. You did it.” Leah cried, placing her hand on the back of your baby girl.
You rubbed your daughters back, before looking at Leah.
She had the biggest smile on her face, tears rolling down her cheeks.
“I’m so proud of you.”
You smiled at her in response, too exhausted to speak.
You stared at your daughter, her eyebrows furrowed exactly like Leah’s.
She had small tuffs of blonde hair along with blue eyes, the exact shade of Leah’s.
“She looks like you. Look, exactly the same eyebrows.” You said, smiling at Leah.
“Hey!” Leah exclaimed quietly, clearly joking.
“Mum, would you like to cut the cord?” The nurse questioned Leah who nodded straight away.
She was handed a pair of scissors, being guided on where to cut it.
Your daughter was taken from you to get checked over whilst you pushed the placenta out.
The nurses helped you get to the bed, Leah walking towards you a few seconds later with your baby girl swaddled in her arms.
“She weighed 7 pound 1, and she’s perfect.” Leah told you, sitting on the side of the bed as you both looked at your newborn.
“She is perfect.” You agreed
“We love you so much, Olive Cassandra Williamson ”
Chapter 1: The Journey Begins—Understanding Conception in Expectant Fathers
Introduction
Embarking on the journey to parenthood is an exciting and transformative experience. For expectant fathers, understanding the intricacies of conception is the first step towards a healthy and fulfilling pregnancy. This chapter delves into the biological processes of male fertility, the various methods of conception—including natural intercourse, artificial insemination, and in vitro fertilization (IVF)—and the significance of the monthly heat cycle when ovulation occurs.
The Male Reproductive System: An Overview
Anatomy and Physiology
Understanding your body is essential for maximizing fertility and achieving conception.
Testes: Produce sperm and the hormone testosterone.
Ovaries (Male Ovaries): Specialized organs that release eggs (ova) during the heat cycle.
Heat Cycle: A monthly period of increased fertility when ovulation occurs.
Uterus (Male Uterus): The organ where a fertilized egg implants and develops into a fetus.
Anal Canal: Serves as the birth canal during delivery.
Hormonal Regulation
Testosterone: Influences sperm production and libido.
Estrogen and Progesterone: Regulate the heat cycle and prepare the uterus for pregnancy.
Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH): Control the release of eggs during ovulation.
The Heat Cycle: Timing is Everything
Understanding Ovulation
The heat cycle is a critical window for conception.
Duration: Typically lasts 5-7 days each month.
Ovulation: Occurs mid-cycle, releasing a mature egg ready for fertilization.
Signs of Heat:
Increased body temperature.
Heightened libido.
Mild abdominal discomfort.
Clear cervical mucus discharge.
Tracking Your Cycle
Calendar Method: Mark the start and end of each heat cycle to predict ovulation.
Basal Body Temperature: Measure daily temperature to detect the slight rise during ovulation.
Ovulation Predictor Kits: Detect LH surge indicating imminent ovulation.
Monitoring Symptoms: Be attentive to physical and emotional changes.
Natural Conception: The Traditional Path
Sexual Intercourse During Heat
Engaging in sexual activity during your heat cycle increases the likelihood of conception.
Optimal Timing: 1-2 days before and after ovulation.
Frequency: Regular intercourse every other day during the fertile window.
Positions for Conception:
Positions that allow deep penetration may facilitate sperm reaching the egg.
Remain lying down for 15-20 minutes post-intercourse to aid sperm travel.
Factors Affecting Fertility
Lifestyle Choices:
Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals supports reproductive health.
Exercise: Regular physical activity promotes hormonal balance but avoid excessive training.
Substance Use: Limit alcohol and avoid smoking or recreational drugs.
Health Conditions:
Hormonal Imbalances: Can affect ovulation and sperm quality.
Chronic Illnesses: Conditions like diabetes or thyroid disorders may impact fertility.
Medications: Certain prescriptions can interfere with reproductive function.
Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART)
When natural conception is challenging, assisted methods offer alternative pathways to parenthood.
Artificial Insemination (AI)
Overview: Sperm is collected and directly inserted into the reproductive tract during ovulation.
Types:
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI): Sperm placed directly into the uterus.
Intracervical Insemination (ICI): Sperm deposited near the cervical opening.
Procedure:
Performed in a clinical setting by a healthcare professional.
Sperm can be from a partner or a donor.
Success Rates: Vary based on age, fertility issues, and sperm quality.
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
Overview: Eggs and sperm are combined outside the body, and the resulting embryo is implanted into the uterus.
Procedure:
Ovarian Stimulation: Medications stimulate multiple eggs to mature.
Egg Retrieval: Eggs are collected using a minor surgical procedure.
Fertilization: Eggs are combined with sperm in a lab.
Embryo Transfer: One or more embryos are placed into the uterus.
Considerations:
Time Commitment: IVF requires multiple clinic visits and procedures.
Emotional Impact: The process can be emotionally taxing; support is essential.
Cost: IVF can be expensive; explore insurance coverage and financing options.
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
Overview: A single sperm is injected directly into an egg during IVF.
Indications: Used when there are sperm quality or quantity issues.
Procedure: Similar to IVF with the additional step of sperm injection.
Preparing for Conception
Preconception Health Check
Medical Evaluation:
Visit a healthcare provider for a comprehensive health assessment.
Discuss medical history, medications, and any chronic conditions.
Fertility Testing:
Semen Analysis: Evaluates sperm count, motility, and morphology.
Hormonal Tests: Measures levels of testosterone, FSH, LH, estrogen, and progesterone.
Ultrasound Examination: Assesses the reproductive organs for any abnormalities.
Lifestyle Modifications
Nutrition:
Increase intake of folic acid, zinc, selenium, and antioxidants.
Consume plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
Exercise:
Engage in moderate physical activity to maintain a healthy weight.
Stress Management:
Practice relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises.
Avoid Environmental Toxins:
Limit exposure to pesticides, heavy metals, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals.
Supplements and Vitamins
Prenatal Vitamins:
Start taking prenatal vitamins at least three months before attempting conception.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids:
Support hormonal balance and fetal development.
Consult a Healthcare Provider:
Before starting any supplement regimen.
Emotional and Psychological Preparation
Communication with Your Partner
Shared Goals:
Discuss family planning desires and expectations.
Emotional Support:
Be open about feelings, fears, and hopes.
Intimacy:
Maintain a strong emotional and physical connection.
Coping with Challenges
Infertility Concerns:
Acknowledge that conception may take time.
Seek professional counseling if needed.
Managing Expectations:
Understand that each journey to parenthood is unique.
Building a Support Network
Family and Friends:
Share your plans with trusted individuals.
what about… a short msr bathtub fic, but only if you feel like it.
It got a little out of hand, so have 1300 words of bathtub fic. TW: infertility mention/IVF arc.
She answers the door wearing a robe. He steps in quietly and she locks the door behind him. She looks soft and small despite the bulk of the terrycloth, her bare feet silent on the floor. She takes his hand without speaking and leads him across her apartment.
The bathroom is full of steam; it swirls out when she opens the door. She draws him in. With the door shut, it’s as if they’re sealed away in another world. Water thunders into the tub, capped with a thick layer of quivering bubbles. He can see particles of mist in the air. Sounds seem muffled. She turns away, lets the robe slip off her shoulders. He turns his back hastily, but he can see a sliver of her side in the mirror: pale skin, a compact curve from rib to hip, an arc of lurid ink. He closes his eyes and unbuttons his shirt.
She called him earlier, an exchange of mostly breath. It wasn’t out of character; they’d both picked up the phone before just to know the other one was on the other end. At last, she said, “Please come over”, and the smallness of the request broke something in him. She should have known he’d do anything for her. He’d been to Antarctica and the graveyard and the IVF clinic for her, sat in filthy rooms and sterile ones, waiting for news.
Now he stands in her bathroom undressing. He can hear the taps creak off and the water swirl as she gets into the tub. There is an air of unreality to it: the steam, the heavy scent of bergamot, the unaccustomed glimpses of skin. He’s seen her naked before, but those moments were dictated by circumstance. This is her choice.
He toes off his shoes, folds his shirt and his jeans over them, drops his socks and his boxers on the top of the pile. When he turns, she’s tucked herself into the end of the tub, sitting with her knees drawn up. He climbs into the other end, hands braced on the sides. The water rises according to the principles of Archimedes, brimming toward her knees. Their toes touch in the center of the tub. He loops his arms around his bent knees, holding himself together, giving her space.
They sit like that in silence, quarantined at their separate ends. Together but not. She lets out a long shaky breath.
The water is hot enough to prickle at his skin. Scully is already flushed, tendrils of hair curling around her face. He’s trying not to look, he swears he’s trying not to look, but he’s always been transfixed by her.
“I’m tired,” she says at last.
“I know.” He studies her, keeping his eyes above her neck.
“I wanted….” Her voice breaks. She swallows. “Mulder, I really wanted it to work.”
“I know.” He rests his hand on the side of the tub, there if she’s ready to reach for it. She tangles her fingers with his.
“Did you?” Her eyes search his face. This is the moment, he understands. This is what could make or break them, after everything they’ve endured. Total honesty or nothing.
“Yeah,” he says, nearly choking on the word. “Yeah, I did.” He closes his eyes against the swell of emotion that makes his chest ache. A child. With her. He wanted that. He wanted it so badly he never allowed himself to know how much it meant until it wasn’t plausible anymore. He wondered about it from the moment he found her ova, wanted it badly from the first time he saw her with Emily.
In a way, he’s ashamed he feels this way. It’s such a cliché, to want to see her bear his child. It feels old-fashioned, even chauvinistic. There’s something primal about how territorial he felt about her during the IVF process. He felt larger, heavier, sensitive to her relative delicacy. He prowled at her side, showing his eyeteeth to Skinner, sensitive to any attempt to invade their pride of two.
He had some secret knowledge of her then, despite the fact they’d never made love. His seed inside her made her his woman. He hates that he enjoyed the thought: she belongs to herself first. But a baby would be a shared responsibility, immutable in a way their assignment to the X-Files isn’t. It would change both of their lives irreversibly. It would link them forever. He wants it so badly he can’t breathe.
The water ripples. He opens his eyes. She’s kneeling now in front of him, a supplicant. She puts her hands on his knees, her hot palms cupped over his skin. Scully has touched him everywhere, maybe, but not here.
“Will you kiss me?” she asks, and his heart breaks all over again.
“Anything,” he says, the way he should have years ago, the way he should have months ago when she first asked him. “Scully, I’d give you anything.”
He’d been terrified then. He’s terrified now. They have been standing on a precipice for so long, their backs to the abyss. The road has been steep and rocky; at times they’ve had to blaze their own trail. There are higher peaks, perhaps, higher truths, but they’re weary of climbing to the pinnacle to find more mountains beyond. He thinks that a paradise might await, if only they can take a leap of faith. She’s the only thing he has faith in, these days.
He leans forward, takes her face in his hands, studies her. Her eyes gleam. She’s got that little crease between her brows that bespeaks great internal turmoil. She studies his face.
“Scully,” he says tenderly. He strokes her hair back. His fingertips find her jaw and gently draw her forward. She leans closer, her weight supported on her hands on his splayed knees. He angles to meet her halfway. His lips brush hers. A butterfly’s wing, the lightest breathless touch.
The world shifts. In his heart, a hurricane forms.
How could he have been afraid of this? How could he not have been?
He can count the number of times they’ve kissed on one hand before tonight and not even use all his fingers. It’s magic every time. This time, it transforms them. The leaden tension that’s hung heavy between them since Diana’s return is transmuted into gold, pure and soft and shining. Her mouth opens in sudden hunger, asking urgent questions, and he answers, pulling her close.
It all feels like a dream. Their hands slide smoothly over slick skin, leaving trails of bubbles. He stretches out his legs and it seems she floats into his lap. Everything is easy. Everything is simple. He touches her breasts, her hips. She balances herself with a hand on his chest as she sinks onto him. They draw pleasure out of each other with lips and fingers, with hot breath and sweet words. She rests her forehead against his as she comes and pants against his mouth. The water sloshes as his body shudders under hers.
They towel each other off, after, moving slowly and gently. Scully’s towels are warm and soft as a Downy commercial, or maybe it’s just that everything feels like a miracle. Her mattress yields to their combined weight as comfortably as if they’ve slept together every night for years. Her bare skin against his is heaven. She exceeds his expectations, always. He knew she would. Still, this kind of solace seemed unimaginable. Fictional. They had written themselves out of happy endings. Now here it is, some blissful twist to their story. He can give up his holy quest: the Grail is in his arms.
“One more round,” he says. It’s a question and a promise. His fingers are splayed over her belly. He tries to ignore the softness of her, tries not to imagine a fecund swell instead. His imagination has always run wild.
“I’ve exhausted my resources,” she says in a small distant voice.
“I sold my father’s house,” he tells her. “Let me do this for you.”
“For me?” she asks.
His heart swells. He pulls her closer, nuzzling into her hair. “For us.”
“For us,” she whispers. She clutches his hands to her breast.
“I love you,” he says, and the once-bitter words are honey on his tongue.
A few things to understand about Dawn:
She very much lives in the future. It’s what makes her such an optimistic person, and able to shove away the pain of the past. She’s always looking forward. So, when the future is uncertain, she gets a bit frantic.
She would much rather spin out on tangible problems like time and money than face the deeper, more abstract feelings trying to surface. If she’s spinning on the details, then there’s no room for the emotion to come through.
And if she can figure out all those little details and have a plan, then she can go back to living in that future place and keep those nasty emotions buried deep where she believes they belong.
But, as I’m sure we all know, what you don’t face will come back around one way or another.
Transcript:
Phoenix: What are you doing? Dawn: I can’t sleep. Phoenix: What time is it? Dawn: A little after two. Phoenix: Come here, come back to bed. Dawn: I’m too restless.
Phoenix: What’s on your mind? Dawn: Nothing. Everything. Phoenix: Do you wanna talk about it? Dawn: [sighs] I don’t know yet. But since you’re awake, can I ask you something? Phoenix: Of course.
Dawn: What do you want more: to get married or have a baby? Phoenix: What kind of a question is that? Dawn: I just mean, we’re gonna have to prioritize. The fact is, we only have so much money in savings. If we have to go through IVF, then we can’t afford to do that AND have a wedding.
Phoenix: Told you we should’ve eloped. Dawn: I’m serious. Phoenix: I know, I’m sorry. Dawn: So, if we can only do one now, which would you choose? Phoenix: I- I don’t know. I think I’d choose baby, but if it’s important to you to be married first, then— Dawn: No, I don’t care about that. I think I just worry that if we put it off now, then it might never happen. Phoenix: What do you mean?
Dawn: Like, if we go through this process and it’s successful, that’s great, but then we have this baby taking all our time and energy and money and we’re on our own and how do we even save and plan for a wedding while doing all of that? And there’s no guarantee that it will even be successful, so what do we do then? If we put our savings into this and it doesn’t work? Do we save again for a year and be right back where we are now? I hate that it has to be so hard. Maybe it’s better to focus on getting married now because we know in the end that day will be wonderful and happy and then we save and try for a baby after. But we’ve already waited a year to start this process and I don’t know if I want to wait another. I was so happy and excited and now I’m freaking out and I don’t know what the right answer is.
Phoenix: Dawn, sweetie, breathe.
Dawn looks up at him, tears stinging the backs of her eyes threatening to betray her.
Phoenix: Come over here.
Dawn: What? Phoenix: I know it’s not what you want to hear, but there is no right answer. All we can do is take things one step at a time. When is your appointment? Dawn: I don’t know. I was going to call them tomorrow.
Phoenix: Good, go ahead and make the appointment. Let’s see what your doctor says, and then we can decide what direction we want to go. We don’t have to figure it all out now, okay? Dawn: Okay. Phoenix: Is there something else? Dawn: No. I don’t know. I don’t want to talk anymore tonight. Phoenix: Alright. We don’t have to.
Phoenix: It’s all going to work out though, I promise. Dawn: How do you know? Phoenix: Because we’re in it together. Dawn: [grins] Is that the best you’ve got? Phoenix: That’s all I’ve got.
thoughts on hen's relationship to her body and gender and especially the concept of pregnancy. in both times pregnancy was plot significant in the show (karen's ivf, then maddie's ppd) she seemed to have an... odd understanding of it, emotionally speaking.
with the ivf she couldnt grasp karen's grief and struggled to understand how karen felt her embryos as a part of her. hen referred to the whole deal an "idea," detaching it from the physical reality. that disassociation of the pregnancy as "a step on the way to a baby" from its reality as a bodily process stands out to me.
and then there's maddie's ppd. henchim's fight in late s6 may have been. uhh. out of left field and a pitiable reach for Drama but. i do find hen's attitude toward maddie's ppd salvageable when considering hen's broader relationship to pregnancy.
hen is a black butch-leaning lesbian. masculine women, lesbians, and black women are three groups of women who are among the most distanced from "femaleness" in society, and hen is all three. given this identity, i can see her growing up repulsed by/uncomfortable with her body and dissociating from it, just on account of living in a world that treats bodies like hers so violently. after being shot as a teenager, too, hen could have disassociated from her body to cope with the physical trauma. ultimately i have a hard time believing that, with the life she's led, she's had an easy relationship to her body and bodily autonomy.
going back to pregnancy, the association between femaleness=femininity=maternity has a long history of twisting people's relationship to pregnancy; with hen's history, i imagine that being especially relevant. i suspect the idea of getting pregnant has always been something hen was personally repulsed by. it's interesting how the idea of hen carrying henren's baby is never raised. it's not even a question, even though plenty of butch women do get pregnant, happily. it's just an unspoken fact is that hen would never get pregnant. it's a given.
so i suppose it's no shock that hen has a disturbed relationship to pregnancy that, unfortunately, she may sometimes on project on others, as with karen. her relationship to pregnancy is just one manifestation of her uneasy relationship to her body and gender, i feel
of our own making
(an X-Files fanfic)
Chapter 15/34 - nature/nurture
[Read on AO3]
Krista is a lovely young woman. In her second year at Georgetown, with plans to get a Master's and a PhD after her undergraduate studies, having a child really isn't in the cards right now, nor would she be able to financially sustain the situation in a few years time.
It turns out, the previous couple she'd selected ended up getting pregnant themselves and had to back out, which was just an added stressor for Krista who was trying to focus on her studies, knowing finals season would be approaching sooner than later.
Mulder and Scully are more than willing to step in, and by all accounts, their meeting with her went… well.
Really well, honestly.
Scully had bonded with her over their shared Alma Mater, and even happened to have taken the same introductory physics class as her with an ancient professor who is somehow still teaching after all these years.
Mulder, on the other hand, shares her interest in sports. It seems Krista had been quite the track and field athlete in her high school years, and also won State as the pitcher for her varsity softball team her senior year.
They left the meeting feeling beyond hopeful, something they were unaccustomed to but were slowly beginning to come to terms with, finally.
“I think she really liked us, Scully!” Mulder says, glancing at her excitedly from the driver's seat of the car on their way home. “Can you imagine? If this works out, in less than six months, we'll be parents!”
“It's a scary thought, isn't it?” Scully asks, unable to suppress her own smile.
Scary, and about a million other things, Mulder thinks.
“The good kind of scary,” he says decidedly, and he delights when she nods in agreement, setting aside her skepticism for a moment.
“Yes.”
The drive back to their apartment goes quickly. The place near campus where they'd met up for lunch isn't far from her building at all, and if it had been a little warmer out, they might have even walked. Mulder puts the car in park and circles the vehicle, holding out his hand for Scully after she closes the passenger door, and her hand slides easily into his.
This is something they do now—holding hands. At some point in this process, the occasional gesture of comfort had turned to a casual, almost everyday thing, and Mulder isn't going to complain.
Maybe it was the need to keep up appearances as a married couple that made them do it. After all, in certain areas of their lives now, it's expected. With the adoption agency, with the birth mother… Their relationship, while close, is not one that fits into the mold of the wider public. It's easier to express it in this way for the benefit of others, rather than their usual way of showing affection.
On the other hand, maybe something between them really had shifted. He wouldn't soon forget how Scully had leaned on him, both literally and figuratively, after Pfaster. A year ago, he's not sure she would have trusted him like that, and in hindsight, she was right not to. He hadn't yet earned her trust back, and he'd regret ever breaking it in the first place for the rest of his life.
But she trusts him now. She lets him hold her and care for her and believe in her—believe for her—like he's always tried to do.
He will always consider standing by her side to be one of his greatest accomplishments in life. More than anything he has gained from his time on the X-Files, he has gained a friend. Someone who truly understands him.
He doesn't know what he could have done to deserve her.
Maybe he will always battle these feelings of unworthiness, thinking he could never be enough for her, but it's far too late for him to let go now. Losing her would end him. It's why he had been hesitant to accept her proposal to try IVF in the first place. Every curveball life throws at him is just another thing that could potentially rip their relationship apart. He tries his best to keep those “surprises” to a minimum, but every so often, the opportunity presented is too good to pass up.
Sometimes, he has found, it's worth the risk.
He hopes it will be, in this case. They're so close to achieving what she—they— have longed for for so long, but there's still room for error.
The best he can do is keep moving forward. Stay the course, and pray for fair seas up ahead.
He thinks her father might appreciate his sailing analogy, but then again, he probably would have hated him regardless of his use of sea-based figurative language.
In the hallway, an older woman smiles at the two of them, and Mulder forces a polite smile back at her. He knows what her neighbors must think. They've seen him around for years, and he's even met a few of them in passing. But now he lives here, and his name is even on her mailbox next to hers. There's not much he could say to dissuade their gossiping at this point.
Scully opens the door, turning on a few lights as they shed their coats and put them away. The adrenaline that had fueled them before in what was possibly the most important meeting of their lives has left them exhausted, and he happily follows Scully toward the couch in the living room.
A lazy day is just what they need. Things are out of their hands now. After weeks—months —of preparation, they have done all they can. Now, all there is to do is wait.
It's almost routine, at this point, when they share a couch. Scully curls up under a blanket, her head against a throw pillow, while Mulder fishes the TV remote out of whatever crevice he inevitably left it in last time. He has to move her feet a little to sit down, but as soon as he's situated, he lets her rest them up against his leg.
She's somehow always freezing, but he doesn't mind.
He sets a Knicks game on the screen at a low volume and leans back, his head lolling against the backrest.
There’s something about staring at the swirling patterns on the ceiling that lends itself to deep contemplation. The muffled sound of the TV does too, but maybe that's just a him thing. He closes his eyes, thinking through the day's events. Thinking of the future.
“I feel for anyone in her position,” he says, the thought escaping him and breaking the comfortable silence that had fallen. He can sense Scully is still awake though, so he continues. “It can't be easy to give up your own child, especially when the circumstances are out of your hands. But, in this case…”
He's thought of this a lot, lately. About how one person's misfortune may well be another’s salvation. It's a hard dichotomy to grasp.
“Well, it's a good thing for us, anyway,” he finishes, placing a hand over Scully's ankle. “We might actually get a chance to do this.”
“I hope so,” she murmurs into her pillow.
He opens his eyes, glancing down at her in her restful state.
“We will. I have a good feeling,” he says with all the confidence he can muster. It feels odd, this hope, but it's as real and true to him as the love he carries for his partner. “Wow, it's been a while since I've said those words.”
She breathes out an amused chuckle, curling further into the cushions before she responds.
“For once, I'm inclined to believe you.”
His lips curl in a smile and he playfully tickles her foot.
“I've never been so happy to hear you say that, Scully.”
He knows he should let her sleep, but there are just too many thoughts running through his head that he can't restrain himself. There's a whole world of possibilities about to open up for them. It's exciting and terrifying all at once, and she knows he’s a compulsive talker in those kinds of situations.
He's thankful that she hasn't grown tired of him already and moved to her bedroom to take a nap instead. If they were really husband and wife, that wouldn't stop him. He'd still be able to talk her ear off all night long if he wanted, or until she kicked him out on the couch.
“I can tell you want to say something,” Scully says knowingly, smirking up at him out the corner of her eye.
She knows him so well.
“You think I could coach little league?” he asks, speaking his thoughts aloud. “I mean, I know the kid’s still like the size of a banana, but in a few years’ time—”
“I think that's a great idea.” She turns slightly, adjusting her position so she can see his face properly, and the ridiculousness of his own question causes his cheeks to redden. But Scully takes him seriously. She always does. That's what makes her different from everybody else.
“We have a lot in common with her, you know,” he says, his fingertips massaging unconsciously into her lower calves. “With Krista. Brainy and athletic, all rolled into one. It'll be like having our own little über Mulder-Scully.”
“Don't make me start a nature versus nurture argument with you,” she says, rolling her eyes.
“I'm a psychologist, Scully. I could make a pretty strong case either way.”
She smiles, shaking her head in what he likes to think can be called fond annoyance. They fall silent, eyes locked in a gaze so heavy that he starts to feel a little drunk. The way she mesmerizes him might be worthy of opening an X-File someday. Just to investigate.
“We might have just met our baby, Mulder. Isn't that crazy?” she says, shifting the conversation suddenly in a more serious direction. There's awe in her voice, and he feels it too. “To have been within five feet of this person we'll know and love for the rest of our lives?”
It isn't like Scully to be so optimistic. She's always lived her life believing that to speak your deepest desires aloud is to make yourself vulnerable. Part of him is surprised that she's not being more cautious now with getting her hopes up, but seeing her this way?
He likes it. He likes it a lot.
Maybe he's finally rubbing off on her.
Her arm pops out of her blanket and she reaches for him, drawn to him like a magnet. He happily entwines his fingers with hers, his thumb stroking over the back of her hand.
“I can't wait, Scully.”
Stolas quietly opens the door to the apartment he and Blitzø share, stepping inside with an air of defeat. It’s late, and the dim lighting makes the place feel colder than it should. Blitzø is seated on the couch, arms crossed, his tail flicking anxiously as he waits. He immediately looks up when Stolas enters, his expression a mix of concern and irritation.
Blitzø: Finally. Took you long enough. What the hell happened, Stolas? You’ve been gone all day.
Stolas closes the door gently, not meeting Blitzø’s gaze. His hands tremble slightly as he removes his coat and drapes it over a nearby chair. Blitzø notices the tension in Stolas’s movements and stands, his tone softening.
Blitzø: Hey… what’s going on? You look like you’ve seen a ghost or something.
Stolas takes a deep breath and finally looks at Blitzø, his eyes filled with sadness. He steps closer but keeps a slight distance, his posture rigid.
Stolas: Blitzø… there’s something I need to tell you. Something… I never wanted to say.
Blitzø: *narrowing his eyes* Okay… you’re scaring me now. Just spit it out.
Stolas hesitates, his feathers ruffling slightly as he steels himself.
Stolas: I… I am returning to my family.
Blitzø blinks, his expression shifting from confusion to disbelief.
Blitzø: Return to your family? What are you— wait, what does that even mean?
Stolas: *voice trembling* It means… my marriage to you has been annulled. It’s as if it never happened. And… the adoption of Wesson and Winnie—
Blitzø: *cutting him off, his voice rising* No. No, you don’t get to say that. You don’t get to just—just erase us like that! Stolas, we’re your family! Those kids love you!
Stolas’s eyes glisten with tears, but he doesn’t look away this time.
Stolas: I know, Blitzø. I know but…I want this.
Blitzø: *stares at him, his face a mixture of anger, heartbreak, and desperation* you…want this?
Stolas: I…cheated on you last night…
Blitzø: So?! I forgive you! It’s not worth ending this!
Stolas: The man who I cheated on you with…I found out he’ll be my newly betrothed.
Blitzø looks away, his jaw tightening as he processes the words. Finally, he speaks, his voice quieter but no less pained.
Blitzø: And what about…the baby Striker is carrying?
Stolas: It’s not definitive that he is. IVF fails a lot. And…if he does end up pregnant. I’ll request he get an abortion.
Blitzø: What?!
Stolas: He never consented to that treatment and he was wronged! Why force him to carry someone else’s baby?! Especially when he is sick!
Blitzø: *freezes but understands* Okay…that…if he wants to terminate then we can…
Stolas: I do!
Blitzø: I mean Striker. We can’t force him to do anything like that.
Stolas: Then…perhaps we can prevent a pregnancy from forming. It’s called birth control for a reason right? *uses his magic and summons a few items, pill bottles in particular* This will prevent any…ya know…
Blitzø: *devastated* Okay Stolas…I’ll let him have the option.
Stolas: Thank you Blitzø. I will send for me things.
Blitzø: You’re not even going to say goodbye to Wes and Win?
Stolas: *looks depressed* I don’t think I have the strength to face them.
Blitzø: Coward…just leave.
Stolas: *leaves without another word*
Blitzø: *starts to cry and sinks to the ground*
Striker: *heard everything from the bathroom where he’d been the entire time. He feels his chest tighten and hurt, like his lungs are about to burst. He opens the door slowly and walks over to Blitzø* Blitz?
Blitzø: Go away Striker.
Striker: What?
Blitzø: I SAID GO AWAY! THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT! If you hadn’t come back into my life this never would have happened!
Striker: What?! You’re the one who chased me down!
Blitzø: My greatest mistake was meeting you…
Striker: *eyes widened and he takes a few steps back. He suddenly starts coughing and heaving, vomiting blood, petals, and cactus needles*
Blitzø: *horrified* Striker?
Striker: *collapses and still vomiting blood*
Blitzø: What…have I done?!
Hey there, I just saw your IVF explanation and I just wanted to pop in and say thank you. I just had my fallopian tubes removed a bit unexpectedly (thought it was endo, turned out to be a severe infection) and while my partner and I weren’t planning on having children soon, there is a weird finality to it decidedly having to be done via IVF. I’ve never seen an explanation so clear, with all of the reasoning behind each step, it’s usually just the process itself. It brought a strong sense of comfort I wasn’t expecting. So thank you ❤️
Hi, thank you for your message! It means a lot.
I'm sorry to hear about your fallopian tubes - even though that's sometimes the best thing for our health or fertility in the long term, it's a big step that can bring up complicated feelings. I hope whatever you and your partner choose to do in the future, you have lots of support.
There's SO much science behind IVF and other ART, it can feel overwhelming to understand what goes on. It sometimes feels too much for me, and I've been in the medical field for decades! I've learned a lot from resources like the podcast I mentioned and I can definitely recommend them and other infertility communities :)
People so often say things about infertility or IVF out of ignorance about how it all works, as well as un-examined biases. It's really tempting to stay in a bubble and only talk to people who *get* it, but then the people who are ignorant will still be saying hurtful things.
I've been thinking about writing a bit more around the topic for those less versed in what it all means.
Ronda's strength and resilience in the ring are well-known, but you see a different side of her during this emotional journey. The two of you attend numerous doctor's appointments, each one with its own set of hopes and anxieties. As you hold hands in the waiting room, you share encouraging smiles, reminding each other that you are in this together.
During the initial stages of the IVF process, there are moments of excitement and anticipation as you prepare for the egg retrieval. Ronda has to undergo hormone injections and monitoring to stimulate the production of eggs. You help her administer the shots, and although it's not always easy, you both understand the importance of this step.
There are moments of joy and hope when you receive the news that the eggs have been successfully retrieved, and even more excitement when the embryos are created and stored. But there are also moments of disappointment when some of the embryos do not survive, and the rollercoaster of emotions takes its toll.
Through it all, you are each other's pillars of support. When one of you is feeling discouraged, the other is there to lift their spirits. You hold each other close on nights when the weight of the process feels particularly heavy, finding comfort in each other's presence.
As the time for implantation arrives, you hold your breath, hoping and praying that this time will be successful. The wait feels like an eternity, but you stay by Ronda's side, reassuring her that no matter the outcome, you are in this together.
Finally, the day comes when you receive the news you've been waiting for. The test is positive. Ronda is pregnant, and you both celebrate with tears of joy and relief.
Throughout the pregnancy, you continue to support each other in every way possible. You attend every doctor's appointment together, holding hands as you hear the baby's heartbeat for the first time. You dote on Ronda more than usual, cooking all of her cravings, giving her massages when her body feels extra sore.
As the due date approaches, you prepare the nursery together, excitedly anticipating the arrival of your little one. And when the day finally comes, you are both there to welcome your baby into the world.
The journey to becoming parents may have been challenging, but it has also brought you closer together. You and Ronda have faced the highs and lows of the IVF process with unwavering love and support for each other.
And now, as you hold your newborn in your arms, you can't help but feel overwhelmed with gratitude for the beautiful family you have created together. Your love for each other and for your child is stronger than ever, and you know that no matter what challenges life may bring, you will face them as a team, with love as your guiding force.
Why should someone with no relation to the child be on a birth certificate? While the woman it inherited half its genetic material from and the woman who carried it are being erased from the birth certificate?
‘You could just change the law’: The unexpected costs of surrogacy for one Canadian family
By Rebecca Lau & Suzanne Lapoi
Martin Rioux and his husband have dreamt of parenthood for years. After many ups and downs, the Memramcook, N.B., couple decided to have embryos created with donated eggs.
“We knew we were ready for a child. We gave ourselves maybe a horizon of, like, three to four years,” Rioux said.
After struggling to find an egg donor, and also potential surrogates, Rioux’s sister-in-law offered to carry a baby through in-vitro fertilization (IVF).
Federal laws prohibit paying a surrogate for anything other than expenses incurred because of the pregnancy.
Still, the costs of IVF and other expenses have added up quickly — with Rioux estimating the tally at over $60,000.
The costs don’t end there.
He was taken aback when he learned the hospital would automatically put the surrogate as the parent of his future child on their birth certificate.
“And then we need to apply to the court to show that our situation is an exception. That process costs $5,500,” he said.
“You know, we’re going to make it happen. But $5,500 is a lot of diapers and baby formula when you could just change the law.”
In a statement, the province confirmed the person who carried the child is named as the mother on the original registration of birth form, similar to adoptions.
“There is no difference for a hetero or homosexual couple in the process of surrogacy. All couples must apply to the Court of King’s Bench for a declaratory order via The Family Services Act to have either one or both of parties recognized as a parent on a New Brunswick birth certificate for a child born via a surrogate,” wrote spokesperson, Bruce MacFarlane.
The statement goes on to say that the fee to amend the birth registration is $35 and the fee for a certificate is $45. However, “there may also be lawyer fees associated with preparing the documents and attending court to seek the custody order.”
Rioux and advocates say that court process and legal fees would indeed amount to over $5,000.
Fertility lawyer Sara Cohen tells Global News the processes for putting the intended parents on a birth certificate can be easier, and less expensive, in other provinces.
She points to Ontario as an example, where intended parents can have the option of registering the baby in their own name “if they had followed all the laws properly prior to the embryo transfer.”
While she says she “(doesn’t) want to take away from the time and expertise” of lawyers, she believes steps can be taken through legislation that outline the concept of who a parent is and who intends to be a parent prior to an embryo transfer.
“New Brunswick is lagging because there actually is no legislation around surrogacy or children who are conceived through the use of third-party reproduction,” Cohen said.
“Every other province at this point has legislation that deals with the concept of, and the reality of, children born through third-party reproduction.”
Fertility Matters Canada, a Canadian charity that advocates for equitable access to fertility and family building, says cost is the number one barrier couples face when considering third-party reproduction.
Carolynn Dubé, the group’s executive director, is based in Moncton, N.B. She says the province’s legislation is “outdated and hasn’t been looked at in a very long time” when it comes to surrogacy.
“Family building… has changed significantly in this country and of course, globally,” she said.
“(So New Brunswick needs to have a) look at our current legislation, understanding what other provinces are doing and updating it so that intended parents and those who need to use surrogates in order to build their family, are recognized within that legislation.”
For Rioux and his husband, the road to parenthood has been long. They’ve attempted embryo transfers, as well as had miscarriages and health scares with surrogates who have helped them.
They would like to see additional financial barriers removed for potential parents like them in New Brunswick, so that the process isn’t cost prohibitive.
“If (IVF) continues to fail and if it takes another six years, yeah, money’s going to be an issue,” he said.
“But it’s also going to be, well are we still at an age where we we want children? Hopefully that doesn’t happen.”
What is IVF?
In recent decades, advancements in medical science have revolutionized the field of reproductive medicine, providing hope and opportunities for couples struggling with infertility. One such groundbreaking technique is In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). In this blog post, we will delve into the intricacies of IVF treatment, exploring what it is, how it works, and the potential it holds for those seeking to build a family.
What is IVF?
In Vitro Fertilization, commonly known as IVF, is a fertility treatment that involves the fertilization of an egg with sperm outside the human body. The process begins by extracting eggs from a woman's ovaries and fertilizing them with sperm in a laboratory dish. Once fertilization occurs, the resulting embryos are then implanted in the woman's uterus with the hope of establishing a successful pregnancy.
Understanding the IVF Process
Ovulation Induction: The first step in IVF involves stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Fertility medications are administered to enhance egg production, monitored through ultrasound and blood tests.
Egg Retrieval: Once the eggs are mature, a minor surgical procedure known as egg retrieval is performed. A thin needle is inserted through the vaginal wall to collect the eggs from the ovaries.
Fertilization: The collected eggs are then combined with sperm in a controlled environment, allowing fertilization to occur. This step is closely monitored to ensure the formation of healthy embryos.
Embryo Culture: The fertilized eggs, now embryos, are cultured and monitored for several days. The healthcare team assesses their quality before selecting the most viable embryos for transfer.
Embryo Transfer: In the final step, one or more selected embryos are transferred into the woman's uterus. This is a relatively simple and painless procedure that aims to establish a successful pregnancy.
Success Rates and Considerations
IVF success rates vary depending on several factors, including the age of the woman, the cause of infertility, and the quality of the embryos. While some individuals achieve pregnancy in the first cycle, others may require multiple attempts. It's essential to approach IVF with realistic expectations and to consult with healthcare professionals to understand individual circumstances.
Challenges and Emotional Aspects
Embarking on an IVF journey can be emotionally challenging for couples. The process involves physical, emotional, and financial commitments, and individuals may experience a range of emotions, from hope and excitement to disappointment and stress. Support from loved ones and mental health professionals can play a crucial role in helping individuals navigate these challenges.
Conclusion
In Vitro Fertilization has emerged as a beacon of hope for many couples facing infertility challenges.
